Web accessibility refers to the practice of making pages on the Internet accessible to the widest number of users. People who are affected by accessibility are:
- Blind and partially sighted people
- People with dyslexia
- People who are colour blind
- People with physical disabilities, such as those with impaired mobility.
- People using mobile phones and PDA's to access the Internet
- People using old browsers or old computers.
- People using slow Internet connections.
- The older internet users can have accessibility issues such as poor vision, reduced hand-eye co-ordination and/or reduced mobility,.
- Young Internet users can have poor hand-eye co-ordination and/or a low reading age.
- People who do not speak or understand English fluently.
Why is being accessible so important?
There are three main reasons for making your website accessible:
- It is a legal requirement - Equality is a basic democratic right and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA), requires all publicly accessed websites to be compliant with Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) guidelines, an initiative set up by the Internet's governing body, the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C).
- Making your website accessible to all will enable more visits to your website therefore increasing your businesses exposure on the internet
- search engines will more easily be able to add your website to their listings as your website will be coded in a manner that is easily read.
How can PressKey help your company become accessible?
We will audit your website and provide you with a report detailing any accessibility issues. There is no charge made for the initial report. We can provide a more detailed report upon request.
When you have read the report it is up to you whether you would like us to make the website accessible.
Should you wish to go ahead then changes to the website can take between one day for a basic site and two weeks for a complex high-end one.
The costs for this service are dependent upon the level of work that is required.
